Making Mummies!
a. Soak cane at least 24 hours before working on it.
b. Making sure the rails are lined up, put 1st wire on as close as possible to 1-5/16” from tip
c. Take X-Acto knife and score deeply from 1st wire down to the butt
d. Wrap in knitting thread. Start at 1st wire and go up, starting tightly right above the wire, getting looser as you get higher (approx. ½ inch). Go down below wire, again starting tight right below the wire and getting looser as you get lower. Make sure you go all the way as close to the end as possible.
e. Place mandrel tip in the reed and push down. When you feel resistance, start kneading with your pliers. Do not knead any higher than ¾ inch from the butt. Keep alternating pushing and kneading until the reed will not go any further onto the mandrel tip.
f. Place reed on drying rack. Enjoy hearing your reed speak to you as it dries. Ideally you want the reed to dry at least a week.
